Save money by Cycling

We’re told times are tough and it is clear they are; double dip recession on the horizon, jobs are becoming hard to find, let alone get and people are struggling to make ends meet. It is a little bleak but fear not, there are ways of helping yourself.

If you are lucky enough to have a job and drive to work, have you considered cycling as a means to saving money? If you don’t have a job,  consider dusting down that old bike in the shed and use that instead of driving.

Given the government’s car milage allowance rate of 40p a mile which considers fuel and maintenance costs on an average car you could save more than you bargained for, and get a little fitter at the same time.

Say you live 3 miles from work, a little too long to walk, but 10-15 minutes by bike. If you were to cycle that trip instead of driving you could save £2.40 a day adding up to £12 on a 5 day week or £624 a year (not including a few weeks holidays, but cycling could help you pay for one!). If you are working £624 could easily pay for a smart new bike to help you get to places quicker. After a year its all profit! Add in the possibility of the Cycle Scheme you could get the tax back off that amount too! If you’re not working even a couple of car trips swapped for a bike ride will save you money.

Even if you only do it during the summer you will still save money which you could put towards something nice for yourself (or just to pay the bills).
